Last weekend a business and tourist delegation from Maribor visited Belgrade

Last weekend a meeting was held in Belgrade between Dr. Andrej Fištravec, the Mayor of the City Municipality of Maribor, and Dr. Siniša Mali, the Mayor of the City Municipality of Belgrade. They agreed that a priority for all local governments is to support business in going international, and if approached correctly internationalisation is a way to attract larger investment projects and to stimulate the next economic cycle. As it turned out, local authorities in Belgrade and Maribor pursue a similar policy to support the economy and thus a great number of opportunities for collaboration exist in various business projects. During the meeting the Mayor of Maribor presented the activities of the City Municipality of Maribor to the Mayor of Belgrade – among others he mentioned the Invest in Maribor – Welcome to Slovenia project. In the coming autumn the Belarus, Iran and China Business Forums will take place in Maribor within the framework of this project. Additionally, a delegation from Maribor will attend a business conference in Istanbul. The Mayor of Belgrade talked about the openness of Belgrade to new investments, the coming investment conference in Belgrade, and collaboration between Belgrade, China, Belarus and Russia, and their interests for collaborating with Iran. The Mayor also expressed his wish for regional integration and a joint promotion of the region by establishing a direct air route between Belgrade and New York.

In the presence of both mayors, the Belgrade Tourist Organisation and the Institute for Tourism Maribor-Pohorje signed a Cooperation Agreement in the premises of the Belgrade Municipal Building. Last weekend a two-day promotional event took place on Republic Square in Belgrade where Maribor and the tourism destination Maribor-Pohorje, as well as Styrian wine and culinary specialties were presented and accompanied by great music and promotional material.

The Mayor of the City Municipality of Maribor also attended the signing of an Interurban Cooperation Agreement between the Maribor Regional Chamber of Crafts and Small Business and the Belgrade Chamber of Industry. It should be pointed out, that together with the Maribor Regional Chamber of Crafts and Small Business, the City Municipality of Maribor co-organised a twoday networking event in Belgrade and business meetings between small and mediumsized companies from Maribor and Serbia. The return visit of business representatives from Maribor, after businesses from Belgrade visited the Celje Fair, proved to be an excellent decision because the companies got an opportunity to continue their business talks. According to Aleš Pulko from the Maribor Regional Chamber of Crafts and Small Business, the first implementation of business agreed as a result of the meetings is to be expected later this year. The link between business representatives from both cities was also reflected in the great hospitability of the entrepreneurs from Belgrade and the Belgrade Chamber of Industry. A provisional agreement was also reached on the next business networking event in Maribor which will most probably take place in the coming winter.

The Mayor of the City Municipality of Maribor also met with the management of Nova Ljubljanska Banka in Belgrade. The bank’s management expressed that they would like to be a flexible bank, open to Slovenian entrepreneurs in Serbia and adaptable to their needs. The Mayor also held a meeting with Mateja Norčič Štamcar, the interim Chargé d' affaires at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Belgrade. Representatives of public companies from Maribor also conducted business meetings in Belgrade.
