Business delegation from Maribor visits Belarus

A delegation from the City Municipality of Maribor participated in the Belarus-Slovenia Business Forum organised by the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Minsk. At the business event the delegation presented the municipality its efforts to attract investment and some of the measures for stimulating the economy in Maribor. Furthermore, the participants became acquainted with the projects carried out by the branch office of the Centre for International Cooperation and Development (CMSR) in Minsk and the projects carried out in collaboration with CMRS/SID. Additionally, they demonstrated how they could help companies from Maribor entering the Belarus market and in the next step the Eurasian Economic Union. A tour of the production line of Belaz – a company producing large heavy vehicles – followed. After the tour, the delegation discussed the possibility of a company from Maribor becoming an agent for their trucks in Central Europe.

At the meeting with the Head of the Maladzyechna Municipality the delegation talked about the prospects for cooperation between the cities in economy, culture, sport and education. The representatives of the Belarusian city were very interested in public-private partnerships for the transferring of practices from Maribor to Maladzyechna. It was concluded at the meeting that there is a shared interest in cooperation which will be formally laid out in a Cooperation Agreement signed between the municipalities.

The Belarus Deputy Minister of Industry presented a proposal for cooperation with Maribor. They stressed that they seek cooperation with the automotive industry in particular; they would be willing to invest in additional production lines in Maribor. Cooperation with producers of aluminium components is also particularly interesting because there is no such company in Belarus. It was agreed that after the state elections the Ministry will send Maribor a list of companies interested in cooperation.

The delegation met with representatives of the National Centre for Marketing and Price Study who expressed a wish to collaborate with a Slovenian national authority to cooperate at transnational level in the form of joint participation in Belarus calls for tenders and joint participation in calls for tenders and procurement procedures abroad.
